Uvalde Foundation for Kids Applauds Arrest of Iowa Superintendent, Demands Answers from District
27 September 2025
DES MOINES, Iowa (Sept. 27, 2025) – A senior ICE official informed the Uvalde Foundation for Kids, student advocacy and violence prevention group, yesterday of the arrest of Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ian Andre Roberts. Dr. Roberts was apprehended by ICE agents as an illegal alien from Guyana and an active ICE fugitive subject to a May 2024 deportation order.
The foundation confirmed that Dr. Roberts allegedly fled from ICE agents in his vehicle after they identified themselves, subsequently abandoning the car. He was apprehended 200 yards away in a brushy area with assistance from an Iowa State Police K9. Agents also found a loaded gun, a fixed-blade hunting knife and $3,000 cash in his vehicle.
The foundation stated, "We applaud the decision and actions Of ICE agents in this case. There is no room in Des Moines schools for an individual who apparently has violent tendencies and a history of delinquency. What we wish to know is how does this happen at the highest level of school administration. We demand answers from DMPS immediately and will be requesting a formal review by the State Board of Education and other state officials."
This situation is not about race or larger political issues. It is fundamentally about a leader—an educational leader at that—setting an example and serving his community in integrity, as so many dedicated educators and administrators across Iowa do every single day. (Daniel Chapin, UFFC)
"We know many in the community are understandably confused, perhaps even frustrated, with the recent arrest of their superintendent. However, we must not allow this incident to send a message that the superintendent's failures and actions were acceptable. Additionally, we must hold school leaders accountable for answers.
This situation is not about race or larger political issues. It is fundamentally about a leader—an educational leader at that—setting an example and serving his community in integrity, as so many dedicated educators and administrators across Iowa do every single day. The focus must remain on the breach of trust and the integrity required of those who oversee our children’s safety and education." (UFFC)
